Chinese Shar-Pei
The Chinese Shar-Pei is loyal to their handler, but will not slavishly follow all commands. They are intelligent, dominant and brave. They hate water, and will go to great lengths to avoid it.
Chinese Shar-Pei’s were originally bred to guard, herd, and hunt but today, they are loving companions. They are quite calm but are also independent-thinking and can act aloof. Their instinct to guard and hunt make them a great watchdog.
Because of their strong-willed personality, early training is required. They need a confident owner who establish leadership, or they will not respect them and attempt to assume the role of boss. Training is generally easy, though, as Chinese Shar-Pei’s are quick learners (unless they’re being stubborn, of course).
Major Health Concerns: The Chinese Shar-Pei may exhibit hereditary skin problems. They may have kidney problems which be displayed in fevers and swollen hocks syndrome.
Interesting Fact: Shar-Pei come in many different colours, such as fawn, red (rose), sand, cream, black, lilac and blue.
