Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute was originally bred for use as a utilitarian dog, and then later as a sled dog. Independence, resourcefulness, and natural behaviors are common in the breed. A friendly dog by nature, Alaskan Malamutes think of everyone as their friend. This trait makes them particularly sought-after as family dogs but unreliable watchdogs. Though their large size may intimidate an intruder, that’s the only protection they offer.
One of the oldest dog breeds, Alaskan Malamutes are always in need of a job to avoid boredom. They are extremely intelligent and have incredible energy and endurance. They succeed in many different dog sports such as obedience competitions, weight pulling, and backpacking.
Alaskan Malamutes will do best in homes with large yards where they have opportunities to run and play. Though they are sometimes labeled as stubborn or unintelligent due to their independent nature, with the proper training, Alaskan Malamutes make amazing companions.
Alaskan Malamutes are notorious diggers. They will also challenge for the top position in the household so proper training is required to establish the correct family hierarchy. Not particularly vocal dogs, Alaskan Malamutes rarely bark but they do like to have conversations with their owners via “woo woo” sounds or howls.
Major Health Concerns: The Alaskan Malamute is prone to bloat, hip dysplasia and chondrodysplacis (dwarfism). They are also prone to Zinc Responsive Dermatitis.
Interesting Fact: In 2010 they were named the official breed of Alaska.
