Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound is very elegant and dignified, yet may seem somewhat aloof. They are very sweet, loyal, affectionate and sensitive. They have a low dominance level and normally get along well with other dogs and pets.
The Afghan Hound is considered one of the oldest breeds, dating all the way back to pre-Christian era. They hail from Afghanistan where they were used to hunt large prey in the deserts and mountains. They are known for their ability to run both fast and long distances as well as their independent mindset.
As a puppy, Afghans will seek attention from his family but as they mature, they don’t require a lot of attention – sometimes to the point of not wanting to be petted. They are affectionate and loving on their own terms. Some may be timid and high-strung. They are suspicious of strangers, but not hostile towards them.
Aloofness aside, Afghans are quite comical and can be very amusing. They can be mischievous and are known to steal things from right under their owners’ nose. They love open spaces and, as with all sight hounds, will pursue anything that runs away from them. They can be difficult to train due to their independent nature.
Major Health Concerns: Afghan Hounds have a low pain tolerance, and are highly sensitive to anesthesia. They have a high incidence of cataracts and corneal dystrophy. They are also prone to Demodicosis, hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism.
Interesting Facts: The Afghan Hound is one of the oldest sighthound dog breeds and is also called Tazi, Ogar Afghan, Eastern Greyhound/Persian Greyhound.
