They are devoted to their owners, friendly to strangers and require lots of human attention. They may suffer from separation anxiety, which may lead them to destructive behavior when left alone.
Originating in Switzerland, the Bernese Mountain Dog was bred to herd cattle, pull carts, and be a watchdog – they were a vital part of farm life.
The Bernese Mountain Dog is easy to train, especially if you allow them to analyze what it is you want them to do. They are calm yet outgoing and even a bit goofy when playing with their family. They do well with children of all ages as well as adults.
This breed is slow to mature – remaining puppy-like for some time. They love to learn, though, and can be easily trained. They have a soft personality and their feelings are easily hurt if harsh corrections are used.
