Ibizan Hound
Ibizan Hounds are quiet, clean, playful and polite. They are normally gentle, sensible and sensitive. They will hold back watchfully with strangers. Once they decide the stranger means no harm, they will relax very quickly. Proper human-to-canine communication is essential.
Originally bred to hunt small game and rabbits on the Balearic Island of Ibiza, the Ibizan Hound is still used for hunting in Spain today. Nicknamed “Beezer”, the Ibizan Hound is a playful and silly dog. Though they were bred for determination, stamina, and speed, they tend to enjoy their comforts and like spending their days sleeping. That said, their exercise needs are fairly moderate, enjoying a couple 30 minute walks or jogs per day.
Ibizan Hounds have the ability to jump extremely high from a standstill position – making them notorious counter surfers. They will also need a securely fenced yard of at least six feet high. They have a strong prey drive as well and like to chase anything that moves. Because of this, they cannot be trusted with families with small animals but will get along great with other dogs and even cats if they are raised with them.
A great family dog, the Ibizan Hound is wonderful with children and are generally quiet while indoors.
Major Health Concerns: The Ibizan Hound is hardy and strong, but can have allergic reactions to drugs, including insecticides and flea powders. Some lines seem to be prone to seizures. They have a genetic propensity for Axonal Dystrophy, nerve, and muscle disease.
Interesting Fact: There are three variations of the Ibizan Hound – the smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired.
