Whippet
While intense, the Whippet is sweet, docile and gentle. They are very devoted companions, and are generally calm and quiet in the home. They are extremely sensitive, both mentally and physically. They tend to be intelligent and learn quickly.
Whippets were most likely bred for use by poachers to find rabbits or other small game around the 18th century. They are a great all-purpose dog, exceling in agility and flyball. They can be independent thinkers, which can make obedience training a challenge.
Though generally friendly with people and other dogs, early socialization is necessary to ensure a Whippet doesn’t become fearful of new situations. Their strong prey drive makes them unstable around cats but if they are raised with them they can peacefully coexist. Their urge to chase also makes them unsuitable for off-leash walks – something they enjoy daily.
Whippets love to be around you and are gentle and undemanding. They can be mischievous and playful around children. They are not good watchdogs as they hardly ever bark and are friendly toward everyone. Whippets can suffer from separation anxiety and could be destructive if they are left alone for long periods of time. They are people-oriented dogs and will follow you around all day if they could.
Major Health Concerns: The Whippet is known to have dermatologic issues including hair loss and skin tumors.
Interesting fact: The Whippet was created by crossing Greyhounds with other smaller breeds. They were commonly owned by the working class in 19th century England.
